Tuesday, Feb. 2: FDR in 1932-33
Due Tuesday, Feb. 2:
Read these two texts:
- FDR, Address to the Commonwealth Club — in your textbook, pages 212-220
- FDR, First Inaugural Address — in your textbook, pages 221-24
In your written response, answer these questions:
- Address to the Commonwealth Club: How does FDR’s picture of capitalism and capitalists differ from that of Conwell and Sumner? How does it compare and contrast to the view of Debs? Summarize the nature of the differences.
- Address to the Commonwealth Club: What elements of "The American Mixture" does FDR draw upon? Give two sentences to illustrate the presence of each theme you find: Lockean Liberalism, Civic Republicanism, Humanitarian Enlightenment, and Civil Religion.
- Both Addresses: Whose rights does FDR want to protect and assist? What kinds of persons? What rights does he assert they have? What forces does FDR believe need to be fought against?
- Both Addresses: What is the nature of FDR’s proposals for action? What would Sumner think, and why? Why would Debs not be satisfied?
- Identify an especially noteworthy sentence or two from each of these texts. Copy and paste or type them out here. Then be ready to discuss in class why you found them noteworthy.
